David Landau and Connie Williams call for Delaware County Health Department

Havertown, August 2nd-

Democratic nominee for Delaware County Council

David Landau today called for the establishment of a county wide

health department. Landau was joined at his press conference by State

Senator Connie Williams (D-17), a long time healthcare advocate.

Landau said "Public health has been an afterthought of Delaware County

Council and not a central focus. We must make public health a

priority in this county."

Landau referenced a number of statistics from the State Department of

Health showing that Delaware County is below average in vital areas of

public heath. He said "It is simply unacceptable that we are behind

in meeting the goals set by the Federal Healthy People 2010 Program."

"We have an outstanding system of healthcare providers in Delaware

County, among the best in the state if not the nation. The private

sector alone is simply unable to meet the needs of the community

without partnering with county government." Landau said.

He continued: "By bringing more resources to bear on prevention and

education, we can cut down on expensive treatment of easily

preventable disease and health problems."

Delaware County attention to public health is limited to the

intercommunity health coordination office which is tiny and focused

primarily on emergency preparedness and emergency medical treatment

concerns. "We have an outstanding system of emergency medical

services in Delaware County, so why can't we have an equally excellent

system of prevention and education programs?" Landau asked.

A community health department would also focus on food and water

safety in terms of inspections.

"Our cash-strapped municipalities simply do not have the resources to

inspect and enforce our food and water safety laws," added Landau.

"County Council can take a leadership role in bringing these

communities together to address how we best can protect the food and

water safety in Delaware County."
