LANDAU AND LENTZ SLAM COUNTY COUNCIL FOR NEGLECT OF $2.7 MILLION IN STATE GRANT MONEY
At a joint press conference with State Representative Bryan Lentz, Democratic nominee for Delaware County Council David Landau revealed and then sharply criticized County Council's failure to request its discretionary 2.7 million dollar allocation of Governor Rendell's Growing Greener II Bond Initiative. Landau said "While other counties are taking advantage of this funding stream for open space, Delaware County is sitting on the sideline. These bonds are funded in part by Delaware County tax payers, but they're not reaping the benefits while literally dozens of other counties are." The Growing Greener Initiative made 2.7 million dollars available to Delaware County to use at its discretion. The money became available in November 2005. Landau discovered that not a single request has been made for this money. Lentz said, "I applaud the work David Landau has done to bring this information to light. It just goes to show you that we need people like him to bring back open, transparent government." Landau continued "What is really troubling here is County Council's pattern of telling the public one thing and then doing something completely different. This is what happens when you have unaccountable, one party government for nearly thirty years." He continued "Our opponents in this race, Andy Lewis, Tom McGarrigle and Christine Cannon, tout their commitment to open space. They ought to start by joining me in asking County Council the question 'why is County Council doing nothing with the Growing Greener money?'. Landau has released his own plan for open space which advocates aggressive implementation of open space and park plans, leadership role for County Council in bringing together municipalities to preserve open space and refurbish parks and recreation areas, and distribution of resources such as the Growing Greener funds in an equitable manner.
